JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com – Thousands of Indonesian students held a demonstration in Jakarta on Friday (12/6/2026) to protest President Prabowo Subianto’s government policies which were deemed not on target.
This action received the attention of a number of foreign media who highlighted student demands regarding increases in fuel prices, state spending, and the free nutritious meal program.
Foreign media described this demonstration as a form of anxiety among the younger generation regarding Indonesia’s deteriorating economic conditions, including the weakening of the rupiah exchange rate, fiscal pressure, and concerns about the direction of government policy.

MediaAgence France-Presse (AFP) in a report entitled “Indonesian students protest economic strain” said students gathered at the HI Roundabout, Jakarta, to ask the government to change policy direction when Indonesia faced increasingly difficult economic conditions.
法新社估计约有 2,000 名学生参加了此次活动。 Students from various universities in the Jabodetabek area wore their alma mater jackets and protested against budget waste and the increase in non-subsidized fuel prices.
During the action, students carried a number of banners with writings such as “Indonesia is bankrupt” and “Honk your horn if you are tired of being Indonesian”.
One of the students’ main demands is to end the billion-dollar free meal program, which has been criticized as wasteful and has been linked to cases of mass food poisoning.
20-year-old student Muhammad Nur Asla Junior told AFP that the government was seen as not having the courage to acknowledge the difficult conditions the country was facing.
“我认为政府没有勇气承认我们正处于困境，”穆罕默德说。
“Just admit that there is a crisis, admit that our country is currently experiencing difficulties, and propose policies that can really help or improve what is happening now,” he said.
This French media also reported that the action was marked by pushing between students and police after a number of participants were prevented from entering the security area around the Presidential Palace.

Apart from a number of big programs by President Prabowo which are considered to be a burden on the state budget, students are also said to be protesting the government’s decision to increase petrol prices.
